Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. The lungs are made up of small sacs called alveoli, which fill with air when a healthy person breathes. When an individual has pneumonia, the alveoli are filled with pus and fluid, which makes breathing painful and limits oxygen intake.

Pneumococcal infections are an important public health issue throughout the world. Serious diseases caused by the bacteria include pneumonia, meningitis and febrile bacteraemia, while the most common, but less serious, associated diseases are otitis media, sinusitis and bronchitis. It is estimated that almost one million children die each year due to invasive pneumococcal infection (Ref1a p113).
